Gerard's P.O.V.
 
1 year later
 
 "Where are we going this year?"
 
 "For what?" feigning indifference is surprisingly easy. Is it evil to my 8 year old son believe we're not doing anything for his birthday?
 
 "For my birthday. Last year we went for pizza, the year before we go-karting and the year before I had my party." He said, checking them off on his fingers, hip cocked and everything. He's so like me it's scary. Don't steal the diva pose Squirt, it's my thing. "So where are we going this year?"
 
  I turned to him, my face the epitome of calm. "Nowhere, we can't afford it."
 
 "But, you always save up for my birthday. We stopped buying pop tarts and everything!" He looks so cute it's hard to keep up my fasimle of a sham but I'm managing. Just.
 
 "Well, the money's just not there. The washer needed fixing, Bella broke down," as usual, "Frank bought our anniversary tattoo," the third one, "I'm sorry. You get presents or a day out." We've got him both, but he doesn't know that.
 
 "Frank!"
 
 "What is it Squirt?" he inquired, poking his head round the door.
 
 "Where are we going for our birthday?"
 
 "Nowhere Squirt, we can't afford it." he said, then winked at me conspiratorially. Liam's lip began to wobble, then he stamped his foot and ran out of the room.
 
 "We spoil that child." I said, matter-of-factly.
 
 "He was unexpected. Unexpected children are always spoiled. Do you think he'll forgive us for lying to him?"
 
 "Is the Pope Catholic?"
 
 "I don't know, is he?" I just looked at him in mild disgust and shock. He squirmed uncomfortably.
 
 "What?"
 
 "Disgraceful." I whispered and walked away.
 
Next day
October 31st
 
 "Presents please!"
 
 "Frank, you're such a kid. Go wake up Liam first." Pause. "Nicely!" Too late.
 
 "Liam, get up, get up, get up! Presents!" I hear springs creaking. If he breaks that sofabed, he's paying for a new one.
 
10 minutes later
 
 "A first edition of x-men no. 1. Where did you get this?" He's smiling so much. I like to see his smile, but he's gonna break his face.
 
 "I have my connections. I'm on the art business remember." I said smugly, wrapping my arms around his waist. He to face me and leant in -
 
 "Wow! A Pro-Magnum 180 water gun! You can shoot water like 15 feet with this thing!" Moment ruined. I pulled away from Frank, and he fell forward, latching onto me again.
 
 "A water gun?"
 
 "I love you. Besides, you said something stupid."
 
 "I know, but a water gun?"
 
 "I love you."
 
 "Go get the car keys." I hesitated before adding, "The lexus, not Bella. I'm not breaking down on the highway."
 
 "Only if I can drive." Do I sacrifice my safety for the want of a comfortable seat?
 
 "Oh alright." At least it's not Alicia. I think she's given Junior a nervous tick with her driving. As much as I love her, I wouldn't trust her with Liam in the car.
 
Half hour later
 
 "Come on Squirt. We're going shopping."
 
 "Do I get another present?"
 
 "Maybe, if you're good."
 
At Central Park Zoo
 
 "Daddy, why did you let Frank drive?"
 
 "It's his birthday Liam, let him be."
 
 "Oh my God, it's a zoo!" He's finally clicked - took him long enough. We passed the turning for the shopping centre an hour and a half ago, and we've been following signs for the zoo for the past 20 minutes.
 
40 minutes later
 
 "Wow." Oh God, he's seen the monkeys. He has an obsession with them lately. That's why we brought him here.
 
 "Daddy, what's that monkey doing?" Well, it's masturbating but I can't tell him that.
 
 "It's...cleaning."
 
  Frank had to turn around didn't he? "Oh em Gee! Look at that monkey jerking off!"
 
 "Frank!"
 
 "What did I do?"
 
 "I told Liam it was cleaning."

In the gift shop
 
 "I want a monkey."
 
 "Okay...how about a cuddly one?"
 
 "No, I want a real monkey daddy." Spoilt teenager syndrome much? Already as well. Shit.
 
 "You can't have one. Besides, you have a cat."
 
 "But I want one!"
 
 "Well, you can't have one."
 
 "But I want one."
 
 "Will you settle for a cuddly one?"
 
 "Can I have the biggest one?" I can't believe I'm willing to sacrifice $40 for some peace of mind.
 
 "Yes okay."
 
 "Yay!" God, he really is spoilt.
 
In the car
 
  Liam is asleep on his monky in the back seat, it's so damn cute! And I'm holding hands with Frank. What a perfect day....Except when Frank does that! Oh my God. "Frank, eyes on the road, hands at 10 and 2. Swerve like that again and we're swapping!"
