Gerard's P.O.V
"Frank, there's no way I'm going in the car!" He expects me to go in the car? Who does he think he is?! It's my son, I'm going in the back of the ambulance.
"Gerard, look at me. Liam needs someone who's not gonna stress him out, and that is not you. They'll only let one of us in the ambulance. I am going to go. You are going in the car with Mikey, and you are going to calm down."
"Calm down?! How the fuck am I meant to calm down? This thing has a 79.7% fatality rate! My son could die!"
"DON'T TALK LIKE THAT! Our son is going to be fine."
"Gee, the faster they get him to the hospital, the less likely it is he'll be one of those 79.7%. Just let them do their job." Mikey's sweat-drenched palm on my shoulder didn't exactly fill me with confidence, but I followed him, finally giving in.
I sat in the car in silence for about 10 minutes, and then I just couldn't take it anymore. I let it all out, and Mikey, bless him, took it like a man. "Why? Why Liam? Why him? What did we do wrong? He's never been sick a day in his life, and when he does get sick, he gets a fucking fatal disease. What if he dies? I couldn't live through that. I just couldn't."
"Liam needs you to be strong for him right now Gee. You have to stop talking like that."
"But I'm not strong. I've never been a strong person. Frank's the strong one. We've already established that."
"Frank needs you to be strong for him too."
"But Liam's not his son. He's my son."
"He is Gerard. He's Frank's son as much as yours. He's just more of a...mother-father."
"Mikey, that makes no sense, but then again, nothing makes sense right now."
At the hospital
"Name?" Why does she need my fucking name? I'm not checking in! For once.
"Gerard Iero."
"Relationship to patient?" Like it matters.
"Father."
"But Mr Frank Iero claims he's the father."
"Yes, we're both the father. Notice the second names." How dim can you get?
"Oh. I see." Fucking finally.
"Oh you do, do you? Took you long enough. Now let me see my son!"
"I'm afraid that can't happen right now. You need to be tested first to see if he's passed it on to you."
"Listen lady. If you don't let me see my fucking son, right fucking now, I will not be responsible for my actions. Do you understand me?"
"Please don't take that tone with me sir. I'm just the receptionist. Your son's in assessment, you can't see him anyway."
Frank came up behind me and slipped a comforting arm around my waist. "The sooner we get checked out, the sooner we can see him. Please hun? Do it for Liam."
1 hour later
"You're both fine. You haven't contracted the virus. But I must ask, has anyone else been in contact with him in the past two days?"
"His aunt, his uncle and his cousin."
"Could you please contact them for us? They'll need to be checked out."
Ten minutes after getting off the phone with Mikey, I walked into the waiting room, took one look at Frank and fell to the floor, starting to sob.
My beautiful boy. My unexpected son that could never be replaced may be taken away from me. I won't be able to live through that. I will not be able to walk out of this hospital without him. He's so young, he doesn't understand what's happening to him. All he knows is that he's itchy. They won't even let me see him. They won't let me hold my baby and tell him it'll all be okay.
"Gerard?"
"Go away Frank. Leave me alone."
"He's gonna be okay hun."
"Go away."
"Gerard, I promise you..."
"GO AWAY!" I curled up into a ball and began to emit huge hacking sobs. I need Liam. I need to see him. They will let me see him.
2 days later
"Thankfully, neither you or your close family have caught the virus. We've contained it enough that you can see him..." Oh thank God. I made my way towards the double doors of the isolation ward. Frank held out a hand to stop me.
"You did hear what the doctor said didn't you?"
"I heard nothing after 'you can see your son'."
"He's comotose hun." No!
I collasped onto the floor, unable to go in the room. "Hun, we have to go and see him."
"What if he doesn't come back to us Frank?"
"All the more reason." He grabbed my arms and pulled, almost toppling over himself. I opened the door, mentally preparing myself for what I'd see. For one dreadful moment, I thought he was actually dead. He was lying stock still with more wires and tubes going in and out of him than I thought possible.
I let myself fall into the chair at his bedside, and just sat there, almost comotose myself. "Gee, say something. Do something. Just give me some indication you're still with me."
I didn't answer him, just leant forward and took Liam's hand. This is the part where I turned to him, "I don't care how much it costs. We have to keep him alive Frank."
"Gee, if he's gonna go, maybe we should let him go peacefully." Oh no he didn't. I got up quickly, and gave him a slap with all my force and anger behind it.
"How dare you?" I stormed out, my mind racing. I can't believe Frank could be that willing to let him die. He's everything to him, at least I thought he was. Maybe it's all a been a very impressive front. Maybe the love I saw in his eyes when he first held Liam was a lie. I hope to God it wasn't, 'cause if it was, I married the wrong man. I mean Zacky loved me, would Zacky have loved Liam?
*Loud ominous beeping sound*
Liam!!
There's a very large doctor blocking my way. All I could hear was Frank shouting, "I won't leave until you tell me what's wrong!"
"Liam!!"
"Gerard? Help me, they're trying to make me leave." He's clinging onto the headboard. How could I ever have doubted him? Of course he cares. The large doctor turned towards me.
"Mr Iero. Please could you try to control your partner."
"Tell us what's wrong with our son."
"Okay, try to stay calm. We lost your son's heartbeat for a second there. We've got it back but it's very faint. We need to work on him to get it back fully and we can't do that with you in the way."
I just lost all feeling and my only thought was getting Frank out of the way. I pinned his arms to his sides, and started to pull. Thank God he's small. I finally got him outside.
"Gerard, our son is dying in there! How can you stay calm?"
"Because one of us has too and it's not you is it?"
2 hours later
"You can come in and see him now." We followed the doctor, walking in tentatively not knowing what to expect.
"Hey Squirt." I said, stroking his forehead. He was barely awake but it was enough. The doctor turned towards me smiling.
"His temperature is receeding which is a good sign. It's very likely that he'll make it through this. You've got a little fighter there."
"Just like his dad." We said simultaneously.
The doctor gave us a strange look. "Which one?"
"Him." We said simultaneously. Again.
"Okay, this is beginning to confuse me. I'll leave you to it." Liam giggled very quietly. I turned and stared at him.
"Don't you ever do that to us again."
"What daddy?"
"Get seriously sick. It's not good for daddy's heart, or his mind, or his marriage. It;s just not good for daddy full stop."
"In his defense Gee, it's not really good for him either."
"Shut up Frank."
"Frankie, daddy's confusing me."
"Just ignore him. I do. It's how we've lasted this long. We just ignore each other's faults and get on with it."
"Now you're confusing me!" Liam whined.
1 week later
"Right, your son has made a remarkable recovery and we're going to discharge him. But I need to explain a few things first. He will always be seceptible to illness now as his immune system took a big hit. So if he gets sick regularly don't worry. It's normal. Also, he's going to be physically scarred for life. We've identified scars on his hips, his neck, wrists and the top of his thighs. If they start to worry him, just use Bio-Oil. Trust me, it works."
At home
"Helena!" Trust that to be the first thing Liam shouts. He has an unhealthy obsession with that cat. And yep, she is now in her usual place on his shoulder. It's as if he never left. I must thank Susan for coming in and feeding her.
Me and Frank both turned to Liam, "Welcome home Squirt."
